Woohoo! 308 heroic humans contributed $34,853 to get the Open Letter published in the LA Times on Sunday, November 10th. The remainder went to the Alliance on Climate Education.

Positive Moves

  • Gates is pro-carbon tax and made it clear that if he had one wish for the world, it would be to solve the coming climate crisis. [source]

  • He attempts to humanize the problem and connect it to other related social issues. [source]

  • He is a co-founder of the American Energy Innovation Council which pushed to boost federal energy research spending from $5 billion to $16 billion annually. [one two]

  • He supports a wide variety of possible solutions, seeking “a portfolio of solutions” with regard to environmental challenges. [source]

Room for Improvement

  • Gates has hundreds of millions of dollars invested in Eni, Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp. and Total of France. Though a media criticism of the investments spurred an internal review of investment policies, the review was halted. [one two]

  • While the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation acknowledge the impact of climate change on their philanthropic efforts, they do not – and will not – tackle it directly. [source]
