Open Letter Indiegogo Campaign

Woohoo! 308 heroic humans contributed $34,853 to get the Open Letter published in the LA Times on Sunday, November 10th. The remainder went to the Alliance on Climate Education.

Addressee Profile: Ryan Lance, CEO of ConocoPhillips

Posted on

ryanlanceRyan Lance is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ConocoPhillips. He made our list by heading up the world’s largest independent pure-play oil and gas exploration & production company.

Note: As recently as July 2013, ConocoPhillips was ranked the 11th largest company by revenue and the 5th largest non-stated-owned energy company by revenue. However, the company recently separated its upstream and downstream businesses into two stand-alone, publicly traded corporations, ConocoPhillips and Phillips 66. Phillips 66 is expected to rejoin the list of largest companies by revenue sometime this year. [source]

Positive Moves:

  • He has acknowledged that humans are accelerating climate change and thinks the global community should take action to address the problem. [source]

Why that’s not enough:

  • ConocoPhillips owns 49% of a facility in Bohai Bay which, in 2011, was responsible for a series of three oil spills totaling an area six times the size of Singapore. [1 2]
  • The company recently applied for and won FAA approval to fly unmanned drones in the Arctic in order to survey ice floes and migrating whales as the company mounts oil exploration efforts. [source]
  • With regard to hydraulic fracturing, Ryan Lance stated at the IHS CERAWeek energy conference that opposition to the process is “due to misinformation and fear”. [source]
  • In 2009, ConocoPhillips actively campaigned against the American Clean Energy & Security Act and argued against the EPA’s ruling that greenhouse gases were pollutants endangering public welfare. [1 2]
