Open Letter Indiegogo Campaign

Woohoo! 308 heroic humans contributed $34,853 to get the Open Letter published in the LA Times on Sunday, November 10th. The remainder went to the Alliance on Climate Education.

FAQ: Why not do an Op-Ed instead of a paid advertisement? Op-Eds are free.

They are, but they also present a few issues:

  • Op-Eds are subject to being tweaked by newspapers’ editorial boards after being submitted for publication.
  • Op-Eds are very clearly framed as OPINIONS. We feel strongly that what we’re advocating in the Open Letter is not an opinion, but an incontrovertible reality.
  • But most importantly: An op-ed written by us is a message only from us. Even if we could get it published – and that’s a long shot, since we are total nobodies – it wouldn’t carry the same weight as hundreds or thousands of people contributing material support. We want this to be a message from everybody who agrees with the Open Letter, not just from us!

That being said, publishing this letter as an op-ed remains an option, and depending on how things go with this fundraising campaign, we may eventually explore that path as well.
